Is it safe to process feathers into feather meal?

The processing of slaughter waste-feathers into feather meal is legally compliant.

With the rise of industrial slaughtering in the late 19th century, poultry feathers were piled up in large quantities as slaughter waste, initially mainly for landfill or incineration. Some farmers tried to crush the feathers and use them as inefficient fertilizers, but the utility was minimal because the untreated feathers were difficult to degrade.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the invention of high-temperature and high-pressure hydrolysis process became a turning point. Feather keratin was broken down into digestible small molecule peptides and amino acids by steam treatment (above 120°C), which significantly increased the feed value of feather meal.

In the 21st century, global environmental policies (e.g. the EU Waste Framework Directive) have classified feathers as organic waste that “must be resourced”, and feather meal has become a typical case of “turning waste into treasure”.

China’s “Feed Ingredients Catalog” stipulates The “Feed Ingredients Catalog” issued by China’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (MARD) explicitly lists Hydrolyzed Feather Meal (No. 7.6.2) as a legal feed ingredient, which is permitted to be used in the production of animal feed.

Note: Feathers need to come from regular slaughterhouses or poultry processing plants, and no feathers from sick and dead birds or unknown sources should be used. They need to be cleaned and sterilized before processing to remove impurities and contaminants.
